Ms. Jill's update 12-6-17

Ms. Jill & Ms. Hilary’s monthly newsletter

Description: Image result for Hello Talking BubbleWelcome to December! Short, busy month!

                      THANK YOU….

Ø  for donating 40 boxes of Macaroni-n-Cheese for our food drive! Our students had a great time counting each day, celebrating the “half way point” and REALLY celebrating reaching over our goal of 30 boxes! Your support was tremendous!! As a school, we donated 260 pounds of food to the Carbon Valley Help Center!

Ø  for sending in your family photos! Our Family Tree is growing and looking gorgeous! If you haven’t had a chance to send a photo in, or email me, you still have time! (note: if you send in an actual photo, we will copy it and send it back).

BOOKS WE LOVED from November & December:

ü  Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright

ü  A Long Winter’s Nap by Katy Hudson

ü  Do You Want to Build a Snowman by Disney

ü  The Mitten by Jan Brett

ü  Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Burhner

ü  Bear Snores on by Karma Wilson

We are learning that every book has a front, back and spine! We are also learning that there is a person who writes the book, called an author and a person who draws the pictures, called an illustrator.

Don’t forget to help your child find items that begin with the letters of the week to bring in for Show-N-Tell on Thursdays! (reminder: please remove all “toys” from your child’s backpack after Show-N-Tell day! Thanks!)

         December 4th – Y(y) & Z(z)

December 11th – because of a special event, we will NOT be having Show-n-Tell this week!

         December 18th – January 1st CHRISTMAS BREAK

Colors, Shapes & Numbers…. Oh my! We are learning them by song AND in Spanish. Ask your child how to say our color in Spanish, they are so proud of themselves!

         December 4th – Orange/Anaranjado

         December 11th – Yellow/Amarillo

         December 18th – January 1st CHRISTMAS BREAK

Ø  We are in the middle of our Weather unit, with a concentration on WINTER for the weeks of December. So far, we have enjoyed reading and learning about snow and creating melted snowmen with shaving cream and glue. We have also read and acted out The Mitten by Jan Brett. Ask your child about hibernation!

Don’t forget to help your child return their library book every 2 weeks! If they return it they can choose another book! We hope they are cuddling up with you for a special story time.

Ø  AM & PM Classes – 1st & 3rd Thursday

Makerspace! Our students LOVE this area! We made material shoot out of the wind tunnel, placed foam blocks on a conveyer belt and watched them all fall into a pile when we turned the crank, and we picked up items with all kinds of magnets! If you don’t know what Maker Space is, ask to look in on it the next time you are in the halls.

Ø  AM & PM Classes – 2nd & 4th Thursdays

·      Please check your child’s backpack each day just in case we have placed information in there for you. Also, please clean it out on a regular basis.

·      Remember to look for Thursday folders every Thursday and to return it and anything else, back to school on Monday.

·      We go outside EVERYDAY down to 20 degrees. This means we need to bundle up to stay safe and warm outside. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately and has a warm coat, hat, scarf, boots and gloves with them EVERYDAY through the cold weather months. On days they wear boots, please pack a change of shoes for inside. Thanks for your support!

What to work on at home:

·      INDEPENDENCE! It is coat, hat, mitten & boot season. Let your child try to put on everything by themselves. Encourage them to try, try, try!! Of course, they can also use their manner words to ask for help after they have given it their best.

·      Using their “Bat Wing” when sneezing. This helps us not spread germs.

·      LETTER RECOGNITION (upper and lower case) & LETTER SOUNDS. At Spark! we use supplemental curriculum called Zoo Phonics to help us learn our letter sounds. Actions paired with the sounds of each letter to assist our students in the learning process. Search “Zoo Phonics” on YouTube and watch/listen while your student shares the alphabet with you!

·      Review with your child the four parts that make up STAR power. Talk about what these may look like at home and school.

                  1: Stay Safe

                  2: Use Teamwork

                  3: Act Responsibly

                  4: Respect Self & Others

Spark! 4th Annual Book & Toy Drive:

Help us put a smile on the face of a child! Drop off any new, unwrapped book or toy from 11/13/17 to Friday, 12/15/17 at Spark! Discovery Preschool, at 555 8th Street, Frederick, from 7:30 am – 4 pm, Monday through Friday. Staff will help to distribute items to children in need from our school at their homes before the holidays. We are also in need of wrapping paper, tape, and bows. Families being assisted have not asked for assistance, don’t know that it is coming, and packages are delivered anonymously on doorsteps.

Help us to TAKE ACTION in our local community! Parents who work could consider having their workplace help us in this community service project too!
