Ms. Piper’s Update 10-9-18

Ms. Piper’s Class Newsletter 10-9-18

Hello, preschool families! We hope this message finds you well. This is the classroom update for the month of October.

What We’re Learning

We have completed our first STEM Unit, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! This week we began our second unit, Buildings. In this unit, we will explore what kind of buildings are in our community, what they are used for, what they are made of, and how they are built. So far, the children have enjoyed constructing their own buildings and investigating the tools and vehicles used for building.

In literacy, the children have been practicing writing and recognizing their names, and have begun writing uppercase letters and learning their sounds. Hopefully, you have seen the homework pages in their Thursday folders. The homework is an extension of the learning we are doing in the classroom. It is entirely optional; however, we do have small prizes as an incentive for children who complete theirs and bring it back!

In math, we have been doing counting activities, particularly with numbers 1 through 5. We count by rote, count objects, subitize (quickly identify “how many” without manually counting each item), and learn the order the numbers go in. We have also begun to work on identifying numbers.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Thank you so much for making the time to meet with me to talk about your child. It was so rewarding to get this time to speak with each family individually. I am moved by how invested every single parent is in their child’s learning. With parents like you, these kids are going to go far!

Family Photos

Thank you to everyone who has sent a family photo for our wall! If you have not, please send one (either printed or by email) if you can, so we can out it up for your child to look at and tell us about!

Seesaw

Last Friday, I sent out an email with instructions for accessing Seesaw, an app where I can share your child’s learning with you at home. If you need help figuring it out, let me know. Also, while I am using the permissions you signed at the beginning of the year to determine what is shared through this platform, let me know if you DO NOT want your child’s work or photos to be used on Seesaw. What I upload can only be seen by families whose child is tagged in each entry, but sometimes there might be more than one child in each one. If this is not okay with you, tell me and I will figure out how to mask their faces or make individual posts for those children.
