We had a lot of fun this week with our final project for the Exercise and Health unit. Our students loved tasting the different fruits on Monday. Some discovered that while they’d never had grapefruit they really like it while the lemons and limes got a lot of sour-pucker faces. The class got to vote on which fruit they liked best. and the strawberries were the big winner with 8 votes while the other fruits got 2 or even fewer. I then used the results of our taste exercise to help place students in groups with friends who liked similar flavors so that on Wednesday we could make our juices.
They had so much fun using the fruit squeezer and the juicer on Wednesday – if you are looking to have some fresh juice at home I suggest putting your little chefs to work! (The fruit squeezers are available at the dollar store for just a dollar.). They were all a little disappointed that the strawberries, while delicious, didn’t make a lot of juice. If they wanted to change their lemonade’s flavor without spending all of class squeezing they had to add another fruit as well. Soon we were combining all kinds of fruits. The students also discussed if they wanted pulp in their drinks and came up with a name for their special beverage. Today we tasted all of our amazing juices. While some preferred the drink with more orange than grapefruit, the consensus was that we all could make amazing juice. Ask your child about what they liked best about the drinks – we even completed a rating for the drinks that your child has in their backpacks. None of this would have been possible without your generous donations of fruit and juice to help them discover what they like and then experiment with the mixing. Thank you so much for providing our class with this wonderful learning experience! For the next two weeks our class will be enjoying a mini-unit on dinosaurs! Please look for a separate email sharing information about this. We are going to be combining our dinosaur unit with Dr. Seuss week which should be lots of fun. Thank you for sharing your children with us! Sincerely, Ms. Kiersten and Ms. Maria
