Ms. Kiersten’s update 10-28-18

Ms. Tawna and I had so much fun seeing our friends at Trick or Treat Street Friday night!  While we won’t be having an official party in class, we will do several fun activities related to Halloween this week to keep the holiday fun rolling.  Please remember to dress your child in regular clothing Wednesday. Halloween shirts/socks/bows are welcome but costumes can be problematic.

This past week our classes had lots of fun exploring the world of ramps.  We had a water marble maze in the sensory table, road ramps in blocks, and the Friday class even experimented to see if a gentle slope or a steep slope makes a ball roll further.  Soon we will be heading to the Makerspace where there is an even more exciting ramp set up we will get to explore.  (Date is still TBD, unfortunately.)  We also noticed that there are lots of inclined planes all around us – the ramp to the gym, the stairs in the gym, as well as the slides and ladders on the playground are all inclined planes. This coming week we will be exploring more about how simple machines help, specifically on the farm.  After reading the book Big Pumpkin, we will be trying to move a heavy pumpkin and then try to split it open.  While I am thinking a lever and wheels with axle might be helpful in moving the pumpkin, I am curious to see what they come up with.  Wedges on Wednesday and Thursday should help us to see just what is inside these pumpkins.  Be prepared – they will be getting to play in the pumpkin goop! We will also be continuing with our guest teachers next week.  Ms. Mercedes will be visiting with us on Monday and Thursday to help get our teeth ready for Halloween. Be sure to ask your student what they learned from her about keeping teeth healthy. If you are interested in placing a book order for October, please do so by Monday night.  I will be finalizing the order Tuesday to make sure we all get our October deals.  If you are more interested in the November order, that is fine.  I will be placing that order on November 7th in the hopes it comes in before the break. Please see below for important dates. As always, thank you for sharing your children with us! Sincerely, Ms. Kiersten & Ms. Tawna Important Dates Thursday, November 1, 6-7 pm, PTO General Meeting in the cafeteria.  Please come and let your voice be heard! Sunday, November 4, 2:00 am – Daylight Savings Time – move your clocks back an hour. Tuesday, November 6 – Election Day – classes as usual Wednesday, November 7 – Elementary Late Start – Preschool starts at the usual time. Thursday, November 8 – November Book Orders are due. Thursday, November 8 – SPARK PTO night at Chick-Fil -A in Longmont Wednesday, November 14 – Picture retakes Thursday, November 15 – Pajama Day Fundraiser for PTO Friday, November 16 – Pajama Day Fundraiser for PTO Saturday, November 17 – Sunday, November 25 – No school over Thanksgiving Break.
