Ms. Amy Newsom’s Update 9-23-19

Dear Families,

We have continued our exploration of health and wellness this week. Two weeks ago, we brushed teeth models with sugar on them and looked at healthy and unhealthy teeth. We also talked about why we wash hands and did an experiment with a black light to see if we were able to wash our hands well enough to get pretend germs (lotion) off of our hands.

This past week, we focused on healthy foods. Thanks to everyone who brought items to help with this unit! We tasted and graphed vegetables that we like and painted and took a picture to make a class book with our favorite vegetables. We also graphed with Fruit loops and sorted them by colors and made cereal necklaces.

This week we are focusing on exercise. We will talk about why and how to exercise. We are going to draw our favorite type of exercise on Wednesday. We have also been reviewing shapes. Last week we did triangles, circles, and squares. This week we will review rectangles. Look for shapes at home and talk about their sides and corners to support our math learning.

Letters this week: E & F (We are learning in alphabetical order letters and sounds, so this will make 6 taught letters A-F). You can practice the letters and sounds together at home. On Thursdays I have been sending home letter sheets to practice sounds with your children. They do not have to return these, but it is a benefit for you to work on with your child. There were some monthly sheets for MyOn and suggested activities to track healthy eating and exercise to talk about as a family. The information for creating your MyOn account was sent home in Thursday folders this past week. If your child brings the MyOn sheets or healthy eating or exercise sheets back, they can choose an item from the prize box.

Upcoming conferences: I have scheduled a conference for everyone, and I was able to accommodate all requests. If I made a mistake, you can call the office to reschedule. Hopefully the times will work for everyone and I look forward to discussing your childrens’ progress with you.

I tried to create a google doc for families to sign up to make playdough and cut out lamination at home. However, I learned that there are some limitations for emails outside of the school district. So a parent shared with me a website called sign up genius, and I created a way to sign up for these activities through the website. So if you got an email from that website please respond if you want to help out at home. I have already gotten responses from some families.

I apologize I have not done much with Seesaw yet, but I will work on posting more photos soon so you can see some of our awesome learning that is going on!

Finally, our school fundraiser went home on Thursday. These need to be returned by Thursday, October 3 since we do not have school on Friday the 4th. If each child sells 10 items we will reach our school goal. You can register online through www.ShopFund.com and sell items to out of state family or friends as well to help reach our goal. Your child can earn prizes as incentives by selling items. Please help support us so that we can purchase additional items for our classrooms!

Next week: Our STEM design challenge is happening next week (September 30-October 4). We are going to create juice after reading the story Caterina and the Lemonade Stand by Erin Eitter Kono. I will be posting a sign up Tuesday to sign up to bring fruits, plates, and sugar to make the juice using the sign up genius website. We will need these items next Monday so children can choose what fruits they will want to use in their juices. Thank you for all of your support in helping our classroom create!

Please contact me with any questions or concerns and I look forward to conferences next week! [email protected]
