Creating a Positive Learning Environment at Spark! Positive Behavioral Intervention/ Supports (PBIS) is an approach to teaching and supporting positive behaviors and meeting the needs of ALL students. This school-wide approach to behavior focuses on building a safe and positive environment in which all students can learn. Our expectations for S.T.A.R behavior include:
· S = Stay SAFE
· T = Use TEAMWORK
· A = ACT responsibly
· R = RESPECT self and others
We use this framework to clearly define behavior expectations for different environments in our school in order to set expectations for the positive behaviors we want to develop in all children. We also spell out behavioral expectations across each setting on our school (the hallway, the classroom, the playground, the gym, the library, and the like). We include direct teaching of these behavioral expectations. We also reinforce positive behavior in order to change inappropriate behavior and encourage appropriate behavior. If we have on-going issues with children, we take report behaviors and take steps to problem solve. Each month we are engaging in positive rewards with classes who have been earning “STAR power” tickets for displaying and engaging in positive behaviors:
