Ms. Kiersten’s Update 12-10-19

What an exciting week we had last week!  After coming back from Thanksgiving break and sharing our stories about our week away, we jumped right in to our investigation of our five senses:  smell, taste, touch, hearing, and sight.  This mini unit is part of our Robotics study.  We started off by discussing what senses we use when popping popcorn and then popped it and tasted it in class.  Some friends were very surprised that you can hear it popping and being eaten.  From there we’ve been continuing our explorations with listening walks around school, taste tests of sour/sweet/salty/bitter foods, and smelling bottles with different fragrances (so far Jasmine has been losing while cinnamon and orange always get smiles).  We will be noticing how much we use our eyes this week when we try identifying objects in a closed box just by reaching in and touching them.  This is such a fun unit for students and teachers!

Our last week before break we will continue to learn about senses and robots as we explore gingerbread stories and games, culminating in a Gingerbread Day on the last day of class.  This will be a laid-back day in the classroom rather than a big party so as to help our students have a low-stress transition to break.  For more information about this, please see my email from earlier today.
There is a lot going on outside of our classroom as well.  Kindergarten enrollment has started in St. Vrain for next year.  Registration for returning preschoolers will begin when we return from winter break.  If you have missed the information sent out about either of these or have questions, please let me know ASAP.  There are also links to this information in the school newsletter. Spark! is having a new PJ and Book drive this month for some of our students.  Please consider contributing to this if you are able.  It is always a real treat for the children to receive these sweet gifts.  For more information about this wonderful project, please read our school newsletter. Important Dates:
