Dear Families – Welcome! We want to thank you for entrusting us with your children!  It’s been a joy getting to know them and watching them grow and change already during our first week.  Our mission is to engage students in early learning experiences, in partnership with families and the community, that develop a strong foundation, enrich the whole child, and inspire lifelong learning. As this is the first electronic newsletter of the year, you should expect these types of school-wide newsletters from our school several times a month.  Your child’s teacher will also email electronic newsletters about their classroom about the day to day of the classroom.

I want to highlight ways families can support our students in the transition from the home to the school environment is to help them start to understand the differences between the two environments — home and school:

1.  PRIVACY:  One important difference is related to the word “PRIVACY.”  Start using this word to describe delicate situations associated with restroom needs, diapering, changing clothes, etc. in a way that helps children to realize that sometimes situations at home require less privacy than they will at school.  For example, it may be perfectly routine for children to come out of the restroom at home with missing clothes; in the school setting, we work to diminish this sort of action in order to protect the child’s dignity and privacy.  We will always support the students in a way that supports our staff in these situations — so all delicate situations are handled with a two-person assist, which are documented in our environment — with one person assisting the child and another adult witnessing (to protect the child AND the adult).

2. PARENTS ARE DIFFERENT THAN TEACHERS:  Oftentimes young children lack the experience and understanding that parents are different than teachers and staff. Please help us by talking through scenarios about these differences. Here are a few examples: a) parents/family members are people we kiss, teachers and school staff are not, b) parents/family get snuggles — teachers and school staff get side hugs, c) parents look under clothing at child injuries — teachers and school staff don’t (unless medically appropriate and with 2 people present), d) parents/family pick up and carry their kids, and at school teachers and school staff do not, etc. When students are refusing, we wait them out at school.

3. TRANSITIONS: We know the home to school transition can be difficult for the first few weeks. If there is a prolonged transition anxiety period for your child, please work directly with your preschool teacher (or childcare staff) to work on a plan to ease these worries. Here are a few resources regarding transitioning to preschool for those in need of ideas and support related to on-going transitions with preschoolers:

We look forward to working with your child and your family this year!

With respect – Paige Gordon, Principal

A bulletin board with the word "GROW" is pictured with flowers, a bird, and the school logo surrounding it.

Our Motto this year is “GROW BIG, SHINE BRIGHT!” At Spark! our team works to create an environment where kindness and caring prevail. We want every child to work on four schoolwide guidelines. These guidelines include the following and are seen throughout our building.

G – Gentle and Safe: Making sure everyone feels included and safe while at school

R – Ready to Learn and Explore: Trying new things, asking questions, and being excited to learn everyday.

O – Offer Kindness to Others: Being a good friend by sharing, helping others, and using kind words.

W – Work Together: Taking turns, cheering each other on, and solving problems together.

As you come in to the building for various events or your child receives recognition for their positive behavior and following of our guidelines, you can take a selfie at our GROW bulletin board at the front of the building outside of the front office, which looks like the sign above. Parents and guardians can use the picture below to talk about the school guidelines and then post them somewhere you can se them as a touch-point for discussion with your child throughout the year, like a refrigerator or family bulletin board.bWe believe that communication between parents/families, students, and teachers is critical. We don’t expect perfection in our young students – for the vast majority of our students, this is the first structure setting outside of home they have experienced. They are here to learn. If concerning patterns of behavior arise, we will work with you to find solutions. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or the principal.

We look forward to having a great year working together to “Grow Big, Shine
Bright!”

Sincerely – Spark! Discovery Preschool staff

The school's GROW logo and graphic is displayed. It spells out being gentle/safe, offering kindness, ready to learn/explore, and working together.

Parent/Family Activation Codes for Infinite Campus:

Please check an important email that was sent out from District Technology Services (DTS) on Friday, August 15, 2025, to some families (those who didn’t already have access to Infinite Campus). There are instructions on how to set up your child’s Infinite Campus (IC) account. An account needs be created for each family who attends our district. This account will be used for a variety of important reasons throughout their schooling in our school district, such as tuition, fees, grades, attendance records, schedules, etc. throughout a student’s PK-12th grade experience in SVVSD. Please contact the school office if for some reason you didn’t receive this email. Families need to respond within 7 days or these electronic codes will expire. Please call 720-652-7906 if your code has expired or you are newly enrolled.

25-26 Digital Behavioral Code Books:

Thank you for your partnership and supporting the academic growth, safety, and well-being of our students. Every year, St. Vrain Valley Schools has an up-to-date version of the Code of Conduct for students and families to review. This important document guides students and school staff on what expectations for school conduct and the consequences for behaviors that fall outside of those expectations. It is important that families review this information every year and acknowledge their receipt and understanding of this document.  To this end, please click here to access an electronic version of the Code of Conduct for the current school year. After you have reviewed this information, all families must sign an electronic acknowledgement that they have received, read, and understand the information contained, including the Annual Notification to Parents/Guardians; Behavioral Code of Conduct; Rights and Responsibilities of Students and Parents; and Board of Education Policies book. To sign your electronic acknowledgement, please follow the steps described here. Again, thank you for your continued partnership and support. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office at 720-652-7906 – ask for Amy Yanez.

Developmental Screening Opportunity:

As part of our preschool programming, a voluntary screening is available for new incoming preschool students who do not have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) if you wish one. Children who attended preschool last year do not need a screening because their teachers already know and understand how the child is progressing and developing skills. Children with an IEP do not need a screening because they have been fully assessed through the Child Find, and this assessment would provide no new information. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are interested in a short developmental screening for your child who is a newly enrolled student.

Required Safety Drills:

As a part of our required safety and security drills, we practice the following drills at Spark! Discovery Preschool.

Our 5 Standard Response Protocols require the following practice drills:

1. HOLD (“In your classroom or area”)– does not require a drill.

2. Secure (“Get inside. Lock outside doors”) – One drill at the beginning of the year. Secure is called when there is something dangerous outside of the building

3. Lockdown Drill (“Locks, Lights, Out of Sight”) — One announced drill in the first quarter of school and a second unannounced drill later in the school year. A Lockdown is called when there is something dangerous inside of the building.

4. Evacuate (“To a Location”)– The first drill will take place within the first 10 days of the new school year and they are practiced each month of the school year.  We will practice a fire drill this week on Wednesday.

5. Shelter (Hazard or Safety strategy) – Because of preschool rules and regulations, we conduct this drill monthly from February to October, as licensing requires more practice for PK than K-12.

More information about safety and security from our school district is found here.

Student Diapering, Accidents, Potty Training Procedures in Preschool

Here is information about diapering, potty training, and accidents at Spark! Discovery Preschool, so parents and families are aware of our procedures in preschool classrooms, as we safe-guard our students and school staff.

EXTRA CLOTHING: For all families, please provide extra clothing daily in case of accidents, to be kept in their backpack.  Do not put these clothes in a plastic bag, as this creates a suffocation hazard in our classrooms. If no clothes are provided, we have a supply of clothing for emergencies.   Please return the borrowed clothing to school after being washed so they can be reused.

For typically developing children: Typically developing children are expected to be potty trained before starting preschool. We understand that accidents will sometimes occur. If a child is requiring diapering and is typically developing, parents/families need to be proactively working to train the child, as district policy requires children with typical development to be potty trained. In the event of a toileting accident, we will help the child change their clothes and the soiled clothing will be sent home with the child in a bag or container. Staff will not send home soiled clothes in the backpack in a plastic bag because the bag is a suffocation hazard to small children; if a plastic bag is used, it will be kept out of reach of children and handed directly to the responsible adult at pick up. If a container is used, please return the container to the classroom. It is not our practice to rinse out soiled clothing at school because our first priority is to attend to the child. Also our laundry area is not located near classrooms, and taking clothing to laundry would require staff to leave students.

For children with identified special needs: Potty training is an opportunity for families and staff at our school to partner and work together.  In accordance with non-discriminatory laws and policies (Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), children with identified disabilities will not be excluded from District preschools due to the need for potty training.  Diapers or pull ups, along with wipes, must be provided by the parents/guardians in an on-going manner, and these supplies will be ear-marked in a plastic bin for the specific child. Teachers will reach out to parents/guardians when supplies are running low.  Our staff, in collaboration with families, are often able to help make significant progress toward or are successful in the completion of potty training before students transition to kindergarten. Also, no children can be excluded from kindergarten due to potty training needs.

Procedural information: Children in diapers, including those in pull-ups, are checked at least every two hours, and more frequently if needed – whenever the child indicates discomfort or exhibits behavior that suggests a soiled or wet diaper. Children are changed when found to be wet or soiled. When children are napping or resting, they will be checked after the completion of nap time in order to preserve nap or rest time. If a student is refusing to be changed, staff will use positive behavior strategies to support them, and parents are notified of any challenges. Procedurally, diapering and toilet assists will be conducted according to state health department and child care licensing standards using hygienic procedures. If children need creams or ointments to be used during the diapering process, a “Permission to Medicate” form must be completed by a medical professional and on file in our school’s office in order for staff to apply them on children.

Our diapering / potty accidents / restroom assistance procedures also include the following safeguards and documentation for our staff and students:

1. Two staff members (one as a witness and one conducting diapering/toilet assists/accidents) will be involved in all compromising scenarios. Having two staff members attending to children protects each child as well as each staff member.

2. A diapering/toilet assist log is completed and signed off by both (caregiver and witness) staff members involved stating the child’s name, time, date and type of change. If a child is checked and found to be dry and unsoiled, this is documented as well.

Preschool Classroom Volunteer Training……

We principal is excited to host Volunteer Training at various points through the year in our cafeteria at Spark! Volunteer training is required by the Department of Human Services, as we are a licensed preschool, in order to volunteer in the preschool classroom at our school.

Because this newsletter is posted publicly on our website and Facebook page, where the public can get to the links, we have sent an email via Infinite Campus with a Google Form for families to use to sign up for volunteering within the preschool classroom on 8/15/25. If you didn’t get the information due to a recent enrollment, please reach out to our office, and we’ll send you the form.

Because of some sensitive topics, this training is best attended by adults (babies are okay to attend).  Childcare is not provided during training.  If translation is needed, please indicate this on the form.   For parents/family members who were trained during the 24-25 school year, they do not have to complete training again, but will need to complete a new blue-colored form with the teacher for the 25-26 school year. For returning volunteers, the teachers have been emailed your name so they know they can have a conversation about getting started right away without training.

What is the Parent-Teacher Organization?

Every Friday students at Spark! Discovery Preschool bring home a folder with fun activities they’ve worked on in class, and once a month there is a Spark! Discovery Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) Newsletter added to the folder that has upcoming events and fundraisers listed. But, do you ever wonder what the PTO really is? Who the PTO consists of? If maybe the PTO would be something that you would like to be a part of?  P.T.O. stands for Parent Teacher Organization. This group is made up of Spark! Discovery Preschool parents and families, Ms. Paige Gordon, the principal, and Noreen Reeder, teacher, who will be a part of our monthly meetings to collaborate.  It’s a lot like a high school BOOSTER CLUB, but for preschoolers, and it’s a fun way to meet other parents, see what is coming up at our school, and give your ideas/input!

The work of the Spark! Discovery PTO  is to support our school’s children, teachers, staff, parents, and families by:

  1. Creating a welcoming climate and culture, making parent-to-parent connections and fostering networking opportunities
  2. Facilitating parent and family engagement and involvement across comfort levels
  3. Promoting connections and collaboration between school and home
  4. Providing additional funding that supports the vision, mission, values, and goals of Spark! Discovery Preschool
  5. Creating opportunities for our community to have fun and play together

OUR FIRST MEETING IS Thursday, AUG 21, from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm in the cafeteria, and babysitting is provided.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the current PTO Board at [email protected].

St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation:

Our mission is to support the success of our district’s students and educators. Whether through grants, scholarships, events, or community partnerships, we are here to champion the innovative and important work happening in your classrooms and buildings every day.

529 Jump program!- All St. Vrain Valley Schools students in Preschool through 5th grade are eligible for a one-time $50 Scholarship through the 529 Jump program in partnersip with the City of Longmont. Opening a 529 College Savings account for your child is a smart financial move that can significantly ease the burden of future college expenses. College costs continue to rise, with tuition and fees at four-year public colleges increasing by 37% over the last decade. By starting to save early, you can take advantage of compound interest, which means your money grows over time, reducing the need to rely on costly student loans. Loans can accrue substantial interest, leading to
long-term debt that can take years to repay. Furthermore, most living wage jobs today require a college degree or technical certification. Investing in your child’s education now can open doors to a prosperous future, ensuring they have the
qualifications needed to succeed in a competitive job market.

To Participate: Open a qualified 529 College Invest account at www.collegeinvest.org. You must choose from one of the CollegeInvest account types to be eligible for the scholarship (no deposit required) Go to www.529jump.org and fill out the online form to request the $50 scholarship to
be added to your student’s account (CollegeInvest account number is required)

Celebrating Birthdays in Preschool:

Because we must follow USDA guidelines for what is served for snacks, and we have many students with dietary restrictions who cannot have certain foods , our policy for children and families celebrating a birthday is for the family to bring a party favor – some small trinket that can’t be swallowed by young children (pencil, small bottle of bubbles etc.) Families might find these items at the dollar store.  Students with allergies, other medical conditions, and food modifications can feel very sad that they are left out when families bring in food they cannot have.  Please do not bring in cupcakes, cake, or other baked goods – store bought or from home.

From Health Services:

Amanda Rivera, Health Clerk: CHILDREN WITH MEDICAL CONDITIONS: If a child has the need for an Individualized Health Plan (IHP), due to on-going health needs such as allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizures, diaper rash cream, or other health needs, please contact Amanda, our health clerk. We will ensure any child with a health condition starts school with an individualized plan to support their needsAny child who needs medication administered during the school day will need an IHP, which needs to be signed by a physician.  Parents can reach out to Amanda at [email protected].

FOOD/MEALS:  Students will be served snacks and meals in childcare and full day preschool, and students can bring cold lunches to full day preschool.

  • Allergies: If a child has a food allergy, a meal modification form will be needed by our Nutrition Services Department to create a plan for modifying snacks and any meals based on need.  This form is available here or a copy may be picked up at our school’s office. This will need to be completed with the assistance of a physician. Once completed, please drop this off at the office with Amanda, our health clerk, so she can collaborate with Nutrition Services.
  • Meal Preferences: If a family has a food preference, for example the family is vegetarian or the family has preferences based on religion, they should reach out to nutrition services for a meal modification plan in August to [email protected].

GENERAL HEALTH APPRAISAL FORM:  An up-to-date General Health Appraisal Form (GHAF) must be on file for preschool-aged students within the first 30 days of preschool.  This form is required by Colorado state licensing and must be signed by a physician, as the form requires a doctor’s signature, stating the child is healthy enough to attend preschool.  Children who start preschool on Monday, 8-18-25, must have a General Health Appraisal Form by Monday, Sept 15, to continue to come to preschool.  Often parents drop this form off at their medical provider’s office, fax it to them, or take it to their next medical appointment. After dropping it off,  they request that the doctor’s office complete the form, and pick it up the next day. Some offices will also fax it to the school directly when it’s completed.  Waiting to get this completed in summer will ensure families won’t have to update it during the school year, as it expires one year from the last time the child visited the doctor’s office (not the date of the signature).

I am working on putting immunizations into Infinite Campus. The office will reach out to parents if we still need any documents.

Important iPad updates for the School Year

St. Vrain’s District Technology Services has made several updates to student iPads for the upcoming school year to support a focused and secure digital learning environment both at school and at home. One key update is the implementation of a new internet filter, Securly, which adds an extra layer of protection to iPads by blocking certain types of websites. For more information about these PK – 12th Grade updates, please click here. Here is a Knowledge article with more information on iPad settings for families too. Preschool students have some interaction with iPads during preschool as an instructional tool, and these changes are not something preschoolers would know, understand, or need to manage.
