Working Through Concerns – by Paige Gordon

From time to time parents or guardians may have an issue or concern with staff, a policy or procedure, or something that’s been decided by personnel in which they would like assistance.

It is best for all involved that the parent or guardian with the concern meet with and talk with the appropriate staff involved.  Every opportuniity will be given to the staff to seek a resolution of the complaint in an informal manner – with or without the principal’s involvement.

If a parent or guardian calls or emails the principal, I will ask the parent, “Have you discussed this with the teacher?” and parents/guardians can expect to be encouraged to directly contact the staff most closely aligned with their concern. This is because there are many different classrooms, and the best source of information is the teacher or the person directly involved. Staff members will be given the opportunity and chance to seek a resolution to a concern in an informal manner with parents or guardians. If after contacting a staff member, an issue hasn’t been resolved informally, the parent/guardian should contact me.  After that, the issue will be shared with the staff.  Finally, the teacher or staff member(s) involved will be invited to any subsequent meetings to work through a resolution of the concern.

There may be times when a teacher may need the assistance of the administrator if a discussion has escalated or becoming adversarial.  In those cases, teachers have been directed to immediately request my support in the moment.

During any complaint process, I will be there to support all parties through:

1. Listening to and acknowledging all sides

2.  Investigating (depending on the type of complaint)

3.  Sharing information, where necessary and in compliance with policies and procedures

4. Seeking solutions.

5. On-going monitoring of the situation, should it be necessary.

Thank you for your support as we begin another successful year at Spark! Discovery Preschool.  Your support and partnership are vitally important to the success of our students.

With respect – Paige Gordon, Principal
