Ms. Nicky’s Update 11-1-18

Ms. Nicky’s and Ms. Julie’s News

Happy November!  We have been having a lot of fun with our STEM Unit of Study on Music.  We did some fun experiments to explore how sound is made, discussed tempo and rhythm, and talked about all of the music families.  Ms. Julie brought in a guitar and a ukulele and Ms. T., our music teacher, brought in a recorder and clarinet to demonstrate. Students have been exploring a lot of other instruments in our classroom, as well.   In a couple of weeks, thanks to Ms. Julie, we will have the opportunity to visit Thunder Valley K-8 and see their band and choir perform for us!

Home-School Connections

Please continue to read nightly with your child. As you read, please also ask questions about the text.  When we read books in class, we talk about certain elements of a story including Character, Problem, Feeling, Action, and Ending.  When reading with your child at home, it would be helpful if you use this terminology to ask them questions about the text.  For example, “Who is the character in the story?”  “What was the problem in the story?”  “How did the character feel?”  “What action did the character take to solve the problem?”  “How did the story end?” These kind of questions are great for developing your child’s ability to comprehend what is being read to them and, eventually, what they are reading.

Field Trip

To go along with our STEM Unit of Study of Music, as mentioned above, Ms. Julie has arranged for us to go next door to Thunder Valley K-8 to hear their band and choir perform.  We will be going there on Tuesday, November 13, and will spend about 45 minutes there. A permission slip will be sent home next week that will need to be returned to us in order for your child to participate.  Please get that back to us as soon as possible.

A Special Thankful Lunch

On Thursday, November 15, we would like to invite you to come and have lunch with your child.  We thought it would be fun if the students could have someone special come and eat lunch with them.  If you are able to attend, please bring a lunch and plan on arriving at 11:10. We will finish by 11:45 to allow for the rest time that is required by licensing.  To accommodate everyone, we will be dining in the cafeteria. Please limit the number attending to no more than 2 adults.  Hot lunch will still be available on that day for students who are wanting it.

Dressing for the weather

The weather seems to be changing a lot from day to day.  Please make sure your child brings a coat each day. Please also continue to work with your child at home to help them become independent at putting their coat on and zipping or buttoning it.  This will save us a huge amount of time when we are trying to get outside to recess, or when getting ready to head home at the end of the day.

Brag Tag Necklaces

Last week, Ms. Julie and I gave students “Brag Tag Necklaces.”  Each week, students will have a chance to earn more brag tags to put on their necklaces.  They can earn them for academic achievements, as well as showing positive behaviors at school.  They are such a great group, and we think they should be recognized for all of their accomplishments.  We are also hoping the tags will be an incentive for students to work towards goals that they are working towards.  They are given the option of wearing the necklaces each day at school, but they are not allowed to bring them home until the end of the year.  Make sure to ask your child about the brag tags they have received!
