Ms. Nicky’s November 2015 Newsletter

Thank you to all of you who attended conferences!  I appreciate that you took time out of your busy day to talk with me about your child’s progress.  It was nice to have the opportunity to get to know everyone a little better!

We have had a fun month with a lot of learning opportunities!  The students are really enjoying our unit on health, nutrition, and exercise!  Hopefully, they have come home and shared some interesting facts that they have learned.  Either next week or the following week, Ms. Denise, who is a para in another class by day and a gymnastics instructor by evening, is going to bring in equipment from her gym and the students will get a chance to try it all out.

Home-School Connections:  Please continue to read nightly with your child. Not only is it a great learning time, but the students love getting a prize from the treasure box for bringing in their completed reading log. We are having fun learning about Pete’s adventures from the students who have taken him home for the weekend.  If you haven’t had a chance to have Pete at your home yet, don’t worry-everyone will get to take him home at some point during the school year.

Our Big Idea for Math for the month of November is Counting.  Some ideas of things you can do at home to work on this skill are:

-Sing songs and play games that involve counting.

-Play board games with paths to move along by counting spaces.

– Make a number puzzle – Correct Number Sequence

STEM Profile of the Month:  Empathetic

“I am learning to put myself in someone else’s place so I can better understand them.”

Books to encourage empathy:

Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth

The Friendship Quilt by Cecil Kim
